French Toast
Thick slices of bread are soaked in a cinnamon-vanilla egg custard and pan-fried in butter until golden and crisp on the outside while staying custardy within. Simple, classic, and best served hot with maple syrup.

Ingredients
- 8 slices thick brioche or challah bread, slightly stale
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- to taste Maple syrup, for serving
- to taste Powdered sugar, for dusting
- to taste Fresh berries, for serving
Instructions
- Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt together in a wide, shallow dish until fully combined.
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard, letting it soak for about 20 seconds per side so it absorbs the liquid without falling apart.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat until foamy.
- Cook the soaked bread slices in batches for 3-4 minutes per side, until deep golden brown and cooked through in the center.
- Add more butter to the pan between batches as needed.
- Keep finished slices warm on a wire rack set over a baking sheet in a low oven while cooking the rest.
- Serve hot, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with fresh berries and warm maple syrup.
