  1. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden and nutty-smelling; cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Whisk browned butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar until combined.
  3. Whisk in eggs and vanilla until smooth and slightly glossy.
  4. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips and pecans if using.
  6. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours for deeper flavor).
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Scoop dough into 2-tbsp balls onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spaced 2 inches apart.
  8. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and bake 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers still look slightly underdone. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring.
